Belgian PM De Croo resigns after party’s poor election results

Brussels, Jun 10 (EFE).- Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has resigned after his party, the Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open Vld), suffered a significant defeat in federal, regional, and European Parliament elections.

“For us, it was a particularly difficult evening; we lost,” De Croo said in a speech to his ers on Sunday night.

Belgian King Philippe on Monday accepted De Croo’s resignation, and has begun consultations with the leaders of various parties to appoint a candidate to form a government.

Bart De Wever, the leader of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA, the winner of the elections, will be the first to try to form a government.

De Croo congratulated the N-VA, the far-right Vlaams Belang, and the socialist party Vooruit for their election victories, and itted that he had not expected such a result.

“I will not shirk my responsibilities. Starting tomorrow, I will resign as Prime Minister. I will fully concentrate on current affairs and prepare everything for a smooth transition to my successor or successors,” he added.

De Croo acknowledged that his party currently has “more questions than answers” about its election performance.

However, despite the disappointing results, he remained optimistic about the future of Open VLD, describing his party as “resilient” and expressing confidence that the party will come back “stronger.” EFE
