Venezuelan opposition leader meets with Biden in Washington

Washington, Jan 6 (EFE). – Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez affirmed that his meeting with United States President Joe Biden at the White House on Monday was “long, fruitful, and cordial.”

In brief statements to the press after the meeting and in the midst of a heavy snowfall in Washington, Gonzalez reiterated that Biden “accompanies him wholeheartedly” in his attempt to return to Venezuela for the Jan. 10 inauguration in Venezuela.

The meeting, which was not on Biden’s official agenda, lasted about 30 minutes and took place in the Oval Office, according to Gonzalez’s team.

The opposition leader said they discussed “various aspects of bilateral relations” and that he thanked him for the “” he has received from the US government “in this struggle for the return of democracy in Venezuela.”

The White House has not yet issued a statement following the meeting, and the meeting was not part of Biden’s official schedule for Monday.

González did not confirm whether he would meet with President-elect Donald Trump but said relations with the new istration would be “very, very close and also very profitable for Venezuela.”

Gonzalez’s visit to the US comes amid an international tour to seek for his goal of assuming the Venezuelan presidency on Jan. 10, for which he is in open confrontation with President Nicolás Maduro.

The National Electoral Council proclaimed the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro after the Jul. 28 elections but has not provided any evidence with disaggregated results of his victory.

The largest opposition coalition presented voting records that gave the victory to González Urrutia, who has been considered president-elect by the United States and other countries.

His visit to Washington comes after he met on Saturday with Argentine President Javier Milei and later with Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, in addition to holding a video conference with Paraguayan leader Santiago Peña. EFE
