Washington, Jan 20 (EFE).- Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, in an inauguration ceremony held inside the Capitol because of the frigid temperatures.
In his inaugural address, Trump promised to invoke the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, declare a national emergency at the southern border, rename the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America, and reclaim the Panama Canal.

“I was saved by God to make America great again,” the Republican said in front of lawmakers, politicians, and tech company entrepreneurs during his inauguration on Capitol Hill. He added that he wants to be a “peacemaker and unifier.”

“All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” he vowed.
Trump added that he would declare a “national emergency” at the southern border to curb the illegal entry of migrants, and would reinstate the “stay in Mexico” policy enacted during his first istration (2017-2021, which forced asylum seekers to wait in the neighboring country while their cases were processed.

The new president also said he would invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, which allows the government to expel aliens without due process and was used during the Franklin D. Roosevelt istration (1933-1945) to create internment camps for citizens of Japanese ancestry in the US.

The Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico
In a strongly nationalistic speech in which he promised “the complete restoration of America,” Trump declared that “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and iration of the entire world.”
“China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back,” Trump said adding that the Panama Canal was “ foolishly given to the country of Panama” referencing the 1977 Panama Canal Treaties, which transferred the canal’s control to Panama in 1999.

“The purpose of our deal and the spirit of our treaty has been totally violated. American ships are being severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape, or form,” he said.
“A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said.
Trump is expected to sign nearly a hundred executive orders on Monday afternoon.
At 78 years, seven months, and six days, he is the oldest person inaugurated as president in the country’s history. His predecessor, Joe Biden, took office at 78 years and two months. EFE
