Russia resumes fighting in Kursk after Easter ceasefire

Moscow, Apr 21 (EFE).- Russia announced Monday the resumption of military operations in the Kursk border region after the 30-hour Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin and ed by the authorities in Kyiv expired at midnight.

“From 00:00 on April 21, units of the North group of forces continued to destroy Ukrainian Armed Forces formations on the territory of the Kursk region,” the Russian defense ministry said on Telegram.

According to the Russian ministry, “the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the end of the ceasefire amounted to up to 50 servicemen,” in addition to several armored vehicles and three artillery pieces.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced Russia’s failure to implement the cessation of hostilities in its Kursk and Belgorod regions.

“Russia’s promise of a full ceasefire also did not apply to the Kursk direction,” Zelenskyy said on X, referring to these two Russian regions, where, according to the president, Russian artillery fire could still be heard.

However, Russia has insisted that during the ceasefire, between 6 pm Moscow time on Saturday and 12 am on Sunday, Russian troops “strictly observed the ceasefire and stayed at their lines and positions in the special military operation area.”

At the same time, the defense ministry accused Ukrainian forces of continuing their artillery and drone attacks against Russian troop positions, as well as civilian infrastructure in the border regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk, and the annexed Crimean peninsula. EFE
