17 injured, one critically, as car hits crowd in Barcelona

Barcelona, May 16 (EFE).- Seventeen people were injured, one of them critically, after a car hit a crowd of Espanyol ers on Thursday night before the Laliga match against Barcelona.

The Department of Health of the Generalitat has confirmed that four patients are hospitalized, including a 41-year-old man in a serious condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The local police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old woman, was arrested and tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, are investigating the incident and have opened proceedings to establish the cause.

Emergency services attended to 16 of the injured at the scene of the incident, but a further person later went directly to a health center for treatment, bringing the final number of injured to 17.

Images posted on social media by some fans show dozens of Espanyol fans surrounding and shaking a white car, which suddenly moves forward, dragging several fans with it for tens of meters.

The son of Xavier García Albiol, the mayor of Badalona, a town near Barcelona, was among the injured. EFE
