Paris, June 1 (EFE).— Two people have died and nearly 200 others were injured, among them a police officer now in a coma, during overnight nationwide celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s historic first Champions League title, French authorities said on Sunday.
The newly crowned European champions will celebrate their victory with fans in a parade along the Champs-Élysées in Paris at 5 p.m. local time.
They will then be received at the Élysée Palace by President Emmanuel Macron at 7 p.m., before wrapping up the day at the Parc des Princes stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Across , at least 192 people were reported injured and 692 fires recorded, 264 of them involving vehicles, according to the authorities.
At least 22 of the security forces and seven firefighters were also hurt.
A police officer in the northern town of Coutances is in an induced coma after being struck by a firecracker. Le Figaro reported he was transferred to a hospital in Caen.
In Paris, a young man died after crashing his scooter in the city’s 15th district, not far from PSG’s home stadium.
Separately, a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in the chest on Saturday night under unclear circumstances. He was taken in critical condition to a hospital in Dax, a town in the Landes region about 700 km from Paris, but later succumbed to his injuries.
According to local newspaper Sud Ouest, it remains unknown whether he was a PSG er. The Bayonne Judicial Police are investigating.
These two deaths are the most serious incidents reported so far during the PSG title celebrations.
In Grenoble, around 500 km southeast of Paris, a car drove into a crowd early Sunday morning, injuring four of the same family, two of them seriously.
Back in Paris, the epicenter of the celebrations, police have arrested around 500 people for public disorder. Numerous acts of vandalism and looting were also reported, despite the deployment of some 5,000 officers.
For Sunday’s events, authorities have capped attendance at 110,000 for the Champs-Élysées parade. Entry to the celebrations at the Parc des Princes will be restricted, with priority for club .
Large parts of central Paris, including major tourist areas, will be closed to vehicle traffic Sunday, and several metro stations near the Champs-Élysées will be shut down. EFE
